Ageism includes the stereotypes (how we think), prejudices (how we feel), and discrimination (how we act) related to people’s age.

In order to address ageism in our communities, we use the confronting injustice framework which involves defining ageism, providing examples, explaining implicit bias, and offering solutions. All of this should be led by the value of justice, or what is right, fair, and equitable.

Engaging in advocacy and storytelling can help us address ageism by challenging incorrect narratives, negative cultural models, and dysfunctional policies and systems. Older adults and human services professionals have a unique perspective into the system, bureaucracy, and needs to help us all thrive as we age. It is important for us to share these insights with our community and policymakers to improve the support and solutions available.

Illinois Partners has developed an Advocacy Through Storytelling Guide, which can help provide insights into advocacy basics and strategies, crafting effective messages, and how to utilize storytelling for impact.

Reach out to Katherine Cavanaugh (Katherine@IllinoisPartners.org), Training Manager, for questions about ageism or how to use this guide.
