This month, we held a Week of Action as part of the Living Wages, Thriving Communities campaign.
We are deeply grateful to all of the partners, advocates, providers, and workers who sent emails, made calls to legislators, and shared their stories in support of the Human Services Professional Loan Repayment Program. Your advocacy continues to elevate the urgent need for investment in the workforce that communities across Illinois rely on every day.
We want to highlight two powerful stories that reflect the impact of the Human Services Professional Loan Repayment Program and why continued support for this investment matters so deeply for human service workers and the people they serve.
Grace from New Moms shared “Receiving this loan repayment support has not only eased that burden but has also affirmed my calling to serve in this field. The relief has strengthened my financial stability and has created opportunities for long-term growth. Beyond the financial impact, this program has provided encouragement and reassurance that the work we do in mental health and human services is valued.”
Cristina from Family Focus shared “I am a Family Support Specialist at Family Focus that has been working in Early Childhood for over a decade. Being selected to receive $15,000 in student loan forgiveness was more than financial assistance. It was relief. It was opportunity. It was hope. When my debt was reduced, it lifted more than just a financial burden -it lifted stress, uncertainty, and fear about the future. When human service professionals are supported, we are able to show up fully – for our participants, our communities, and our own families. Programs like the loan repayment program strengthen not only workers, but the families and communities we serve. But in order for this impact to continue, programs like the loan repayment program must continue to be funded and expanded.”
These stories matter because they remind us that budget decisions are ultimately value statements, shaping the stability of the workforce and the well-being of the communities they serve.
