We believe that healthcare is a human right and that no one in Illinois should lose healthcare coverage due to federal or state cuts to funding. This month we are highlighting the efforts of our coalition partners who are leading efforts to protect healthcare for all.
Healthy Illinois
Our coalition partners at the Healthy Illinois Campaign, are leading efforts to protect the Illinois Health Benefits for Immigrant Adults Program (HBIA). This critical program has improved chronic disease care, reduced emergency room visits, and ensured that working immigrant families have access to the healthcare they need.
Recently, program participants received notice that their coverage will end on June 30, 2025. In response, Healthy Illinois issued a strong statement condemning the cuts, warning of the harm caused by disrupted care and delayed treatment. They highlighted that immigrants contribute significantly to the state’s economy by paying billions in taxes while HBIA funding accounts for less than 0.5% of the state budget.
Hundreds have shared powerful personal stories, some featured in Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune, and other outlets, underscoring the devastating impact of losing coverage. Just last week, hundreds rallied in Springfield to defend healthcare for immigrant adults.
Both the need and the benefits of HBIA are well documented in a recent report from the Great Cities Institute and the 2024 Health Outcomes Disparities Report from the Illinois Department of Human Services. Protecting HBIA ensures access to care that is essential to addressing and eliminating health disparities in Illinois. Protect Our Care – Illinois
Protect Our Care – Illinois is a statewide coalition of healthcare advocates, providers, and consumers working together to protect Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act. The coalition is committed to ensuring access to quality, affordable healthcare for all Illinoisans.
Currently, Medicaid covers 3.4 million Illinois residents, including 1.5 million children. It plays a crucial role in reducing the uninsured rate, sustaining rural hospitals and community health centers, and providing vital health and support for individuals and families across the state. A cut to Medicaid is a cut to Medicare. Medicaid pays premiums, co-pays, long-term care costs for millions of people who are enrolled in both Medicaid and Medicare, reducing out-of-pocket costs and allowing access to care and medication. Hundreds of constituents are speaking out through stories, rallies, and phone calls to make it clear that Congress must reject any cuts to Medicaid and instead take action to lower costs and protect access to healthcare for individuals and families.
Leaders Stephanie Altman and Anusha Thotokura recently appeared on WBEZ’s Reset with Sasha Simon to highlight the serious risks proposed federal Medicaid cuts pose to everyday Illinoisans. Listen to the interview and visit ProtectOurCareIL.org for fact sheets and additional resources about the impact of proposed cuts to Medicaid for people in Illinois.
